Centauri Carbon Grinding Noise – What’s Causing It

If your Elegoo Centauri Carbon is making a grinding noise, I wouldn't immediately assume something is seriously wrong with the printer. The Centauri Carbon has several moving parts that can create grinding, clicking, rubbing, or vibrating sounds, so the first thing you want to do is figure out exactly where the noise is coming from.

One of the first things I'd check is whether the nozzle is rubbing against the print. If you only hear the grinding noise while printing, especially when the printhead travels across infill or moves from one part of the model to another, the nozzle could be slightly dragging across the printed plastic. Watch the nozzle closely when you hear the sound and see if that's what's happening.

If the grinding happens while the printer is moving around even when it's not printing, check the belts and motion system. Look for anything rubbing against a belt, make sure the belts are properly seated, and check the X and Y movement for anything that feels rough or catches in certain areas. I wouldn't randomly crank down on the belt tension just because you hear a noise, though. You want to identify the actual problem first.

Another surprisingly simple thing to check is the printer itself. Panels, the spool holder, PTFE tube, loose screws, or something sitting against the Centauri Carbon can vibrate and make a noise that sounds much worse than the actual problem. While the printer is moving, gently touch different areas and see if the sound changes.

If the noise is coming directly from the printhead, the extruder could also be the culprit. A filament jam or clogged nozzle can cause the extruder gears to click, skip, or grind because they're trying to push filament that isn't moving correctly. If you're also noticing under-extrusion or filament that won't load, I'd start by checking the filament path and nozzle for a clog.

You can narrow this down pretty quickly by manually moving the printer through its different axes from the controls and listening carefully. If the grinding only happens during X or Y movement, I'd focus on the belts and motion system. If it happens during Z movement, start looking at the Z-axis components. If it only happens while filament is being extruded, I'd focus on the extruder and hotend.

I'd also record a short video of the sound before taking anything apart. Grinding noises can be difficult to describe, and having a video makes it much easier to compare your problem with other Centauri Carbon owners online or show Elegoo support exactly what the printer is doing.

The biggest thing is not to keep running the printer if you hear a loud mechanical grinding sound and can't figure out where it's coming from. A little rubbing or vibration can be harmless, but a belt, bearing, motor, or other motion component that's actually binding is something you'll want to address before putting a bunch more hours on the machine.
